If Babri Masjid can speak, what will it say? Rehan Ansari of TwoCircles.net imagines.
My Kids, the Indians,
May peace and blessings be upon you.
I am the (late) Babri Majid and am feeling like demolished and humiliated again. I remember the hammering on my head (dome) again and the blast like situation inside me. The wounds that Karsewaks under the BJP leader L.K.Advani, had given me is raked up again.
The wounds were bearable but this decision has shred my heart because it questioned my dignity and truth that I was ever existed. Especially the claim of Justice Sharma that there was no mosque since it was built by violating Islamic laws.
I don’t understand the legalities but I know that I was there in Ayodhya for more than last 400 years i.e. since 1528 under the patronage of Muslims and Hindus started claiming Ram Janmbhoomi inside me only after 350 years.
I am a witness of The British’s policy of “Divide and Rule” because of which-on my name-the first incident of communal violence took place in 1859. I remember when the Faizabad district court had rejected the plea of Mahant Raghubir in 1885. I was shocked when in the dark night of 1949 an Idol of Shri Ram kept under my dome. I also remember the first title suit was filed in 1950 and how the other parties like Nirmohi Akahada, Sunny Waqf Board got involved with the movement. I was terribly disappointed when in 1989 Rajiv Gandhi allowed shilanyas ceremony on undisputed site.
I am also a witness of Rath yatra and have seen the vandals under the leadership of L.K.Advani, Uma Bharti and other BJP leaders gathered in Ayodhya of Shri Ram. I was very frightened with the slogans of “Jai shri Ram” but was contented, because I thought that the Karsewaks will not hurt me and will follow lord Ram. I was also quiet because one Ram Bhakt Kalyan Singh had promised that he will take care of me.
But, alas, neither the Kar sewaks followed Shri Ram nor the Ram Bhakts could keep their words and finally I was murdered in the broad day light of December 6, 1992.
I was crying to see the riots that broke out after my demise. I was in great distress that many innocent men and women, boys and girls were looted and slaughtered. It was really terrible when the bomb exploded one after another in Mumbai and killed naive people. I am also the witness of Sri Krishna Commission and the court cases of bomb blasts of 1992. I have seen that the bomb blasts victims were jailed and given death penalties and the criminals of communal violence who were named in Sri Krishna commission were left free.
I was surprised to see how the Congress government under Narsimha Rao kept quite when I was getting demolished and took political mileage by dismissing all the 4 states government under the rule of BJP. I have also seen after my demolition, congress could not make its government in the centre on its own.
I have seen that using my name, Lal Krishna Advani and Kaliyan Singh got their ambitions fulfilled and also a witness how their own party isolated them.
I have seen the rise and fall of Mulayam Singh and also seen his wounds when he befriended with Kaliyan Singh.
I am also the observer of the Justice Liberhan Commission report submitted after the 17 years in 2009 where he claimed that all bureaucrats and police officers of Uttar Pradesh, who served under the Kalyan Singh regime, and whose names find a place in the list of 68 persons, culpable of creating communal violance.
I also observed when Justice Liberhan goes on to say, “It cannot be assumed even for a moment that L.K. Advani, A.B. Vajpayee or M.M. Joshi did not know the designs of the Sangh Parivar. Even though these leaders were deemed and used by the Parivar … to reassure the cautious masses, they were [in fact] party to the decisions which had been taken.”
I have also seen how the report is kept under the cold storage.
I like to request my kids, the Indians that please forget me and move on with your life because I don’t want to see any more bloodshed on my name. I don’t want to feel the pain of demolishing again. The world does not end here; there is a world hereafter too.

Ramzan night at Minara Masjid in Mumbai

By Mohammad Rehan Ansari, TwoCircles.net,
Mumbai: The sight of grilled kebabs, aroma of sizzling sweet malpuas and phirnis is what you need to send your daily diet routine for a toss. This is exactly what you will find at Khau Galli during Ramzan.
Situated in densely populated area of Minara Masjid at Mohammed Ali Road, this lane comes to life as soon as dusk sets in as the faithful break their day-long fast.
If you are foodie and crave for delicious non-veg food then you can’t miss this place. Famous for loyal customers from Bollywood, one can find film actors like Javed Jaffery, Rakshanda Khan and Priety Zinta enjoying their meals late in the night.
One will find this lane bustling with people from all walks of life right up to saheri (dawn) when the fast starts.
The moment you step in, food-stall owners on either side of the lane will start dragging you towards their stall that offers, Meat Kebabs, Chicken Tikka, Khichda, Liver, Kidney, Brain Fry Quail etc. "We saw some middle class non Muslims with teeka on their forehead, enjoying brain and kidney-fry." Khalid, a stall owner told us, “Nearly 25% of the customers are non Muslims and it’s a routine all Ramzan."
Our journey of feasting, after a day of fast, began with The Salwa, an Arabic word for Quail. I wanted to taste the food sent to Bani Israel from Jannah. We ordered a roasted quail and a boy sacrificed the quail in front of us and mixed some masala in it and started roasting.
Meanwhile we asked the waiter about it and he replied, “The quail is especially brought in for Ramzan from poultry forms in Pune, Bhusawal etc districts situated near Mumbai and we have to order it a month before Ramzan.” We were very disappointed to see the roasted quail as we have to search hard to find the meat of quail from its bone. But I told my friend Naved that it’s from Jannah and has to be rare and we both started laughing.
After this ‘tragic’ incident our hunger took us to other stall named as Bade Miyan. We were familiar with this name. It’s a famous eatery situated behind Taj Mahal Hotel near Gateway of India. We decided to move and it was difficult to find a place but finally we sat down on a table in a 10 by 10 sq. feet shop just opposite the backdoor of Minara Masjid.
Disappointment followed us here too; the menu was too costly for us. Chicken soup Rs.90, liver, Zaban and tilli soup was around Rs.80. Everything else was above Rs.100. we helplessly ordered one Zaban and liver soup. We wanted to eat something so we finished the soup fast and moved out of the shop.
Now we were desperate to have something and saw a camera crew of a news channel shooting the stall of Shawarma, a fast food staple of Middle East like a sandwich, boneless chicken, meat, and beef hanged on a rod like thing, grilled for a day and it’s ready to eat. Khalid Miyan shaved some chicken and wrapped it in a roti for us in only Rs.30 a piece.
Then we started moving and had the aroma of Nalli Nehari, Kihchda, which was free of course, and started looking for good chicken fry.
We were shocked to see, a Burqa clad woman, in her late 40’s, sitting on the counter of Zee Chinese and tawa center, a lone woman, in the whole Bazar of nearly 200 stalls.
We got in and asked for menu. But this time, luckily, waiter said they don’t have the menu because, “We used to sell Chinese food throughout the year and tawa food only in Ramzan.” I told Naved, my friend, that let’s eat first. We hurriedly ordered a dry chicken 65 and a mixture of liver and kidney gravy with bread.
I was very anxious to know about the brave lady and wanted to ask her but failed to collect the courage to talk to a burqa clad woman. So we concentrated on chicken 65 and liver fry. After finishing I asked a waiter, “Is this lady alone here or she has a son.” Luckily waiter took us to her son Afnan, a 22-year-old boy standing in front of the stall.
He was a shy guy, contrary to her mother who was shouting and ordering all the time to the waiters and busy catering to the customer. Afnan, the eldest son, told us, “His father, Ehsan Patni, died 8 years ago and I was very young to handle the shop, then my mother Farida Patni took over.” He is only HSC passed and has a younger brother Fauzan studying in an ICSE school Golden Jubliee in Std IX.
Then our craving for sweet took us to Suleman Usman Mithaiwala, famous for the delicious sweets. We wanted to have a Malpua- that evil, fried, delicious egg-filled, syrup-doused delicacy but we were full so we agreed to have a Malai Khaja.
Although our stomach was full but “Dil was still mange more.” We wanted to taste Noorani’s sweet lassi and Masala milk but kept it pending for the next time.

Everybody loves a bad fatwa

Everybody loves a bad fatwa
By Kashif-ul-Huda, TwoCircles.net
Everybody loves a bad fatwa. And why not? It fills column space for newpapers; It brings in viewers for Television channels; it plays into the image of Muslims as a backward community for communalists; and it gives activists a chance to reinforce their secular credentials. Never mind that this fatwa will not change the lives of millions of Muslims and text of the fatwa could be not what has been reported or maybe the said fatwa doesn't even exist.
Fatwa is nothing but a religious opinion from a religious scholar to a question asked by a Muslim on a particular situation that he or she may be facing at the time or might face in future and doesn't know what should be an appropriate way to act in light of Islamic teachings. A mufti then issues a fatwa or opinion based on his understanding of the question and Islam. Just as different medical doctors will have a difference of opinion regarding a diagnosis and treatment plan, it is common for different muftis to give different opinion for the same question.
Media circus
Frontpage of The Times of India, Delhi Edition, May 11, 2010
At least once every year, on a slow news day, some enterprising journalist finds a fatwa that will fit the stereotype about Muslims being backward or Muslim scholars being ignorant or out of touch with the real world or all of the above reasons, and will publish a news story based on this 'prized' fatwa. Let's take the example of the fatwa issued by Darul Uloom Deoband that is making the round in news cycles this week.
The fatwa in question was issued more than a month ago and one can ask the question, why is there a sudden interest by the media in this particular fatwa? A fatwa that is only a sentence long has had numerous newspaper column space and hours of airtime devoted to it. The media bosses have decided that it is an important fatwa because it has all the right keywords to keep the attention of readers & viewers, and therefore will keep a flow of revenue coming in.
One has to question the motive of the major media regarding the publicizing of a fatwa. There is more to this than meets the eye when the Indian media that is obsessed with breaking news and exclusives these days picks up a fatwa that was issued more than a month ago. Within 24 hours of this news being flashed on NDTV on May 11th, 2010, all major media networks of India had reported it. And every new report had added information that was not even there. Let's look at the fatwa first.
Question number 21031 ((http://darulifta-deoband.org/viewfatwa.jsp?ID=21031) to Darul Ifta (house of fatwas) of Darul Uloom Deoband asked by someone in India states: “Asalamu-Alikum: Can muslim women in india do Govt. or Pvt. Jobs? Shall their salary be Halal or Haram or Prohibited?” Answer published on April 4th, 2010 simply answers it as: “It is unlawful for Muslim women to do job in government or private institutions where men and women work together and women have to talk with [to] men frankly and without veil.”
Headlines
Now let's look at some of the headlines of news reports about this fatwa:
Fatwa against working Muslim women: NDTVFatwa to working Muslim women: Don't talk to male colleagues: NDTVWomen's earnings haram, says Deoband: The Times of India [Print edition]Deoband fatwa: It's illegal for women to work, support family: The Times of India [Online]Don't talk to male colleagues: Darul Uloom's fatwa to all working women: DNAMuslim women can't work: Deoband: Samay LiveDarul Uloom says Muslim women can't work in public: India TodayNow, fatwa against working women: Indian ExpressWomen Working with Men Un-Islamic: Deoband: OutlookFatwa against men-women proximity at workplace: Zee News
In case you ever wondered why there isnt a successful supermarket tabloid in India, here is your answer. There is no need for one because major media houses in India do that job very well.

Now let's look at the fatwa again. It doesn't talk about a woman's earnings being haram or unlawful, Islamically speaking. It also not talking about whether women can work or not, rather it is a learned scholar giving his opinion that Islamically it will be unlawful for a Muslim women only if she is in a job that will require her to speak to men "frankly and without veil." I am not sure what mufti sahib meant with the "speaking frankly" phrase, but there is no ruling saying women cannot work or that their earning is haram. This did not stop media houses from publishing news report after news report with sensational headlines that had nothing to do the with the original fatwa.
A simple fact-checking, if Indian media had that system, would have clarified the matter and this fatwa would have remained a non-news. However, this was not to be. Why should anyone bother with minor annoyance when there are pages and airtime to be filled without impunity.
Television channels went a step further and dug up old fatwas dating back to 2005 and 2006 to run on the screens when they were talking about this issue. It is anyone's guess what issues those fatwas displayed on-screen would have dealt with. We can't blame readers and viewers when they see a conspiracy in all this.
Tabassum Khan who is an Assistant Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at the University of California, Riverside argues that the media jumps on these issues because "It further tatters the already tarnished image of the Muslims." And when there is not enough facts to go around they simply add fiction to make it sound more interesting.
Fatwas, good or bad, have only limited public appeal and influence. Sadia Khanam, a journalist with The Eastern Post in Kolkata, says, "I don't encounter many situations where I need to seek the guidance of a fatwa." And maybe it will sound strange to journalists with a very low image of Muslim women, Khanam adds, "It depends on my personal understanding to decide which fatwa can be held correct and followed."
And Sadia is not alone in this, Tabassum Khan has done extensive research on the Muslim youth of New Delhi and she says that "The women paid little attention [to fatwas], but among the young men there were a few who gave importance to these fatwas. But they were isolated and few and far in between in numbers."
So, why are major media houses ready to give up prime space and time for a fatwa that the majority of Muslims pay little attention to? "Mainstream media has no stake in the image of Muslims. They are in the business of enforcing and perpetuating stereotypes. So, if a maulvi works to tatter the already tarnished image, they are the first to give him importance and project his view as the view of the entire community," explains Khan.
Measured response
Darul Uloom Deoband did the right thing by issuing a denial but the damage had already been done. So how should Muslims respond in situations like these? First of all, those who are activists, community leaders, and commentators, and first lines of contact for these journalists who are seeking them for opinions, need to pay more attention to the story. They need to realize that they don't need to respond to all media queries. If they do decide to respond, even if it is going to be along predictable lines, they need to see the source of the story. In this case, it would have been to see the original fatwa.
For half an hour, Shazia Ilmi, Sadia Dehlvi, and Kamal Farooqui debated on this topic on Sagarika Ghose's program "Face The Nation" on CNN-IBN on Wednesday. Strangely, none of them had actually even read the original fatwa. Based on other hearsay news reports, this only served the purpose of keeping untainted the image of Muslims as a monolith community out-of-touch-with-the-modern-world, and women who need to be rescued. Of course, interest of Muslim women is the least of the concerns of the Indian media who are competing for all-important ratings.
One thing is clear that Muslims have no say or control over the media's actions, but that doesn't mean that they have to be passive. Polite but firm emails should be sent to reporters and their editors. Muslim community organizations should send a letter on their official letter-heads to the editors and seek meetings with the editorial staff. In these meetings, examples of serious lapses by media when reporting on issues related to Muslims should be brought to their attention.
Media is not a one-way street and they don't exist in vacuum. In this day and age, readers and viewers have much more power than anyone would like to acknowledge. This power should be used to demand correct and factual coverage. At the same time Muslims need to take these kinds of episodes as opportunity to engage with their non-Muslim colleagues and friends to explain Islam and Muslim practices.
Muslim religious leadership is not above criticism but they need to be engaged to develop a new kind of thinking that takes what Islam has to offer and apply it to the modern world. Religious scholars need to offer solutions to the problems associated with modern life without dragging the whole community to a medieval view of the religion and the world. For this to happen both university-educated and madrasa-educated Muslims need to interact and engage each other.
As Prof. Tabassum Khan rightly states, "It is important for middle-class Muslims to become more vocal and not let uninformed and biased opinions be representative of the community."

TErrorism Reality and Propaganda

Terrorism, Propaganda and Reality
In the world of Economic and commerce it is said that if the U.S.A economy gets cold the world market and economy sneezes but after 9/11 the same has happened with Terrorism. After the attack on the Twin tower, according to some the statue of Capitalism, America successfully lobbied and finally convinced the world that the Islamic Terrorism is the most dangerous phenomenon of the modern humanity. Our country India is no exception, instead a step forward. We are toeing the same line and charging a deprived community for every act of terrorism causing further deterioration.
Knowing the history of U.S. terrorism from Vietnam to Nicaragua, from Afghanistan to Iraq, the Uno is unable to define the terrorism and so is true for our country. If a bomb blast is a terrorist attack than what is the bombardment on the civilians, children and women by the Israelis in Lebanon? How will one define the using of Atom Bomb on Japan? Horror camps in Guantanamo? Killing of Jews by Hitler? Using Chemical weapons against human being of other country? Invading of Iraq, by America and its European allies causing a Million death and that too without the sanction of the UNO?
Politically speaking our learned Prime Minister has once said that Terrorism and Naxalism are the two major causes of concern and a threat to our nation. Knowing his politeness and closeness with the U.S one can easily understand that by terrorism he meant Islamic Terrorism. It was not expected from a person belonging to the Minority community specially who was targeted the same way in the recent past.
In spite of the financial crisis (subprime) and deteriorating dollar, ballooning fiscal and trade Deficit, our business community, as concluded in a conclave of the leaders organized by the noted media house, is not far behind and they see the Bright future of our country in siding with the U.S. and letting of our historic non alignment policy.

Bureaucrats have also joined the war on Terror. Security advisor to the Prime Minister Mr.M.K.Narayanan suspected terrorist funding in our share market but never said a word against the Hedge Funds. He also did not cautioned our little investors who lost lacks of rupees of their saving in the stock market when the George Soros Short more than 3 lacks of nifty future twice as reported by the newspapers.
High cast dominant and corporate media houses are very clever. After minutes of any blasts or attack they don’t only suspects but declare the culprits, ands quoting agencies discover the cell phones; tap the conversation to Pakistan and Dubai.
Instead of the majority of Indians, who are just, as always, few but dominant and powerful are creating a havoc and terrorizing our society for their vested interest.
In Fitna, the movie by the far right dutch Geert Wilders, has reiterated the false propaganda that Islam teaches violence and hence the religion is in question. Fighting with evil is not the exception with Quran or the teaching of Islam alone but every religious scripture or religion commands the same with its follower. It’s in the Old Testament, New Testament, Geeta and Mahabharata. Not only the religion but the modern states of today follow the same to eradicate evil (read terrorism).
S. Michael Houdmann, President and founder of gotquestions.org, explains, “Many people make the mistake of believing the Bible says, "You shall not kill," and seek to apply this command to war. However, the Bible actually says, "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13). The Hebrew word literally means "the intentional, premeditated killing of another person with malice." God often ordered the Israelites to go to war with other nations (1 Samuel 15:3; Joshua 4:13). God ordered the death penalty for numerous crimes (Exodus 21:12; 21:15; 22:19; Leviticus 20:11). So, God is not against killing in all circumstances, but rather only murder. War is never a good thing, but sometimes it is a necessary thing. In a world filled with sinful people (Romans 3:10-18), war is inevitable. Sometimes the only way to keep sinful people from doing great harm is by going to war with them.
He further elaborates, “In the Old Testament, God ordered the Israelites to: "Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites" (Numbers 31:2). See also Deuteronomy 20:16-17. "For hands were lifted up to the throne of the LORD. The LORD will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation." Also, 1 Samuel 15:18, "Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; make war on them until you have wiped them out." So, obviously God is not against all war. Jesus is always in perfect agreement with the Father (John 10:30), so we cannot argue that war was only God's will in the Old Testament. God does not change (Malachi 3:6; James 1:17). http://www.gotquestions.org/war-Bible.html,
In the September 2001 issue of "The Theosophist" magazine Lester Smith in his article DOES THE GITA JUSTIFY WAR? argues that ate the time of great war of 1914 theosophist turned to Bhagvadgita and, thinking they saw in it a justification of warfare, threw over the teaching of the Buddha and the Christ, and joined their countrymen in the prosecution of the war.
What is causing Terrorism if it’s not the religion. About Iraq War, after initial adamant, the Australian Prime Minister, John Howard accepted that war in Iraq was due to oil. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7t_u641NyM&feature=email
Former Chairman of Federal Reserve, Allan Green span, in his book, the Age of Turbulence, acknowledged,” it’s politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows that the Iraq war is largely about Oil.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiWGqGCFcZg&feature=related
Therefore, Terrorism is not the religious but social, economical and political phenomenon and who so ever is preaching violence and killing innocent in the name of religion is completely misguided. It should be concluded by a quote of Retired Justice Hosbet Suresh that “State Terrorism is a reality and else is propaganda.”
